Face yoga has taken over TikTok and Instagram with promises of lifted cheekbones, fewer wrinkles, and a slimmer jawline—all without needles or surgery. But is it legit or just another beauty trend? We asked the experts.
What Is Face Yoga?
Face yoga consists of specific exercises that involve stretching and strengthening facial muscles. Practitioners claim that regularly performing these exercises can improve facial tone, reduce puffiness, and even delay visible signs of aging.
What the Science Says
While there’s limited scientific research on face yoga, a 2018 Northwestern University study showed that participants who performed 30 minutes of daily facial exercises for 20 weeks had improved cheek fullness and looked about three years younger.
“Facial muscles, just like any other muscles in the body, can be toned through exercise,” says Dr. Lauren Smith, a New York-based dermatologist. “While results vary, some patients do see improved definition in areas like the jawline and cheeks.”
Potential Benefits
- Natural face lift: Some users report a lifted, more youthful appearance.
- Improved circulation: The movements may help increase blood flow and oxygen delivery to skin cells.
- Stress reduction: Like meditation, focusing on slow, mindful movements can be calming.
But There’s a Catch
Experts caution that over-exercising certain muscles—especially around the forehead or eyes—could lead to more expression lines over time. Face yoga also requires consistency, often weeks or months of daily practice, to see visible results.
“Face yoga isn’t a miracle fix,” says celebrity facialist Jana Nguyen. “But paired with a healthy skincare routine and lifestyle, it can be a powerful tool in your anti-aging arsenal.”
