How woman were treated in the 17th and 18th centuries?

Women were treated very badly, the following are some traditions in earlier days where women were treated very badly. 

  • THE POSITION IN WOMEN IN SOCIETY:

In communities across India, women were not treated with respect. Her husband, brother and father, husbend took her  decisions. Women didn’t have any right to inherit their father’s property.

  • LIMITED ACCESS TO EDUCATION:

Women were discouraged from attending schools and colleges. It was believed that once women got a chance to study they would be unwilling to do household work and may obey their husband’s words.

  • CHILD MARRIAGE:

Girls were married off at a very young age when they were just 5 or 6 years old. They are even not ready for marriage physically emotionally or mentally.

  • SATI: 

The practice of sati had become common in many parts of India. Widow were told that this was the only way they could attain salvation.

  • FEMALE INFANTICIDE:

The birth of a girl child was seen as a curse in many parts of India. Many female infants died of neglect, while some were deliberately killed.
